How Much Money Do Home Inspectors Make?
The U.S. Government Bureau of Labor Statistics (www.bls.gov) includes Home Inspectors in the category Building/Construction Inspectors. Their latest statistics from May 2020 show that the mean/average wage earnings of this Inspector group is $62,860 a year. Scroll to the table below to see what the mean/average is in your state.
Home Inspector's money income could be higher because there are quite a few home inspectors who purposefully only want to work part-time and there are others who are just building up their businesses to full-time. Actual earnings from home inspections could also be higher because some of the income from inspections can typically be considered profit to the LLC or S Corporation and pass-through to the owner (you) without having to be treated as salary or wages. Building inspectors, on the other hand, are typically full-time employees of a municipality, have to work a set schedule, and do not receive any pass-through income from an LLC or S Corporation.
Most home inspectors charge in the range of $250 to $500 an inspection, and most inspectors can complete at least 2 inspections a day. If an inspector does this for 50 weeks a year, there is a potential to make $125,000 to $250,000 a year.
The table below shows the mean/average Inspector pay by state for this Inspector category according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2020.
