Exam Preparation

If your state does not license or certify its home inspectors, you are not required to take a home inspection exam.  To see what your state requires, click here

Many states use the NHIE exam. See the paragraph below about our study guide for this test. This study guide comes with our Home Inspection Packages. If you did not take our course, but you would still like the study guide, you can purchase it for only $95. Call for details.

If you want to join a home inspector association and become a full member, you usually have to pass an exam.  Oddly enough, some of the association exams have many questions on topics (such as code) that are unrelated to home inspection. The exception seems to be NAHI.  Their exam questions are almost all about home inspections.

To help with the non-home inspector questions on these exams, we have developed the following study materials.

NHIE Study Guide

The NHIE exam is very difficult and has a high failure rate. How can someone prepare for this exam? Our Home Inspection Home Study Package covers virtually all the home inspection-related topics on the exam. However, many of the most-missed exam questions have nothing to do with home inspections*.So, we have developed a study guide that discusses non-inspection related test topics. This study guide now comes with the Residential Inspection Package at no additional cost.

* Most of these questions have to do with New Construction and Code. If you want a more detailed course on New Construction and Code, consider purchasing our New Construction Inspection Training Package. It is only $499 or $399 if you have purchased the Home Inspection Package.

Get the training you need to both pass the NHIE Exam and become an even better home inspector.

NHIE Exam Information

Below are some comments we have heard from test takers. Also listed is an explanation of how our program helps solve these problems.

Reasons for NHIE Exam Failure

How our Training Program Helps

1. "They asked questions on things I have never seen before, things that aren't even in my area. What can I do to prepare?"
1. Because these exams are nationwide, we have gone out of our way to cover topics from all over the country.  For example, we include sections on earthquakes in California, slab foundations and heat pumps in the South, boilers in the East, and swamp coolers in the Desert West.

2.  "They ask so many questions about things that have nothing to do with home inspections.  Why is so much of the test about new construction and code?"
2. We don't know.  If home inspectors do code inspections, they increase their liability tremendously.   But, to help increase your knowledge of these topics, we offer a New Construction/Code Inspection Training Package.  Click here for more information.  We have also developed a study guide to help with the test.  See above for details.

Does Our Program Work? Read what graduate Paul Laitila of Washington says. "It is obvious to me that if I had not taken your course I would not have passed the exam. The practice exam helped me to overcome some of the tough exam questions. The memory devices helped me distinguish what is required by the standards."

NHIE or CREIA Exam Preparation Packages

Did you know that up to as much as 40% of the NHIE Home Inspector Exam and almost all of the CREIA and NACHI exams aren't even about Home Inspections? That's right, most of these exams are about New Construction/Code --items which according to association standards, home inspectors are not required to cover. So, even though you know how to do home inspections, you need New Construction knowledge to pass these exams. How can someone prepare for these exams??  We suggest you purchase the following 2 packages.
